Xinzheng airport is located 37 km southeast of Zhengzhou. It was opened on 28 August 1997, the 21st international airport in China. It was built to replace Dongjiao Airport, which lies in the immediate vicinity of downtown Zhengzhou. There are domestic and regional flights from the airport to most major cities in the People's Republic of China, international cargo flights as well as charter flights to Thailand during the travel season. As for 2014, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport was the 17th busiest airport in the People's Republic of China with 15,805,443 passengers. ==New terminal and second runway== In 2013, China's State Council approved the expansion of Zhengzhou's airport in alignment with its first zone for an Airport-based Economy (ZAEZ),〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=The State Council Approved the Planning and Development of Zhengzhou Comprehensive Experimental Zone for Airport-based Economy )〕 the construction of a new terminal and runway began in earnest. Currently under construction, the new terminal will consist of 470,000m2 of terminal building, an additional 77 aircraft parking stands and six de-icing stations. A second runway will run parallel to the north of the current runway.
